Heroes of Sustainability in Mechelen

Sustainability is central to De Loods De Nekker.

In 2025, during Sustainable Municipality Week, various cities, such as Antwerp and Mechelen, will be putting local 'heroes' in the spotlight who are working on food waste, sustainable mobility, climate adaptation and the reuse of materials.

De Loods De Nekker fits in perfectly with this: every day, we are committed to reducing waste, sorting materials carefully and preparing them for recycling. In this way, we contribute in a very practical way to a circular economy in which raw materials are given a new lease of life.

In September 2025, we were honoured by the City of Mechelen as 'sustainability heroes' with the following description:

"De Loods De Nekker is committed to the environment and to people. They aim for 100 % recycling, turning plastic materials (polypropylene, polystyrene and PVC) back into usable raw materials. They do this by carrying out various small mechanical tasks, such as removing stickers, cutting off pieces, removing wheels, etc. The work is mainly carried out by clients of care institutions. In this way, a meaningful daily activity is provided for these people."

Sterilisation cloths

The sheets, which come from operating theatres in hospitals in and around Mechelen, are prepared for recycling by removing the stickers from them.

Clearing up litter

Once a month, the group goes out to make the streets of Mechelen a bit cleaner.

Dismantling PVC material

PVC materials from Vinyl Plus are recycled to promote the circularity of the materials.

Roche trays

Roche Diagnostics supplies trays from which the pipettes are removed. This is how the guests at De Loods De Nekker vzw prepare the individual parts for recycling.
